about

Motet: "a polyphonic choral composition on a sacred text usually without instrumental accompaniment" (www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/motet).

The seven French motets were recorded sometime in 1992 or 1993. At that time, friend Keith Harrington was putting together a CD-ROM about medieval French cathedrals that used his photographs, written text, and programming abilities. I was honored that he gave me the opportunity to supply music. An undergraduate at the University of Washington, I had recently decided to switch my major from music composition to English. Browsing the UW music library, I discovered this collection of pieces for four voices and decided to use my acoustic guitar and layer the parts with a four-track tape recorder. My process, as I recall, was to first record one voice on piano using my right hand while tapping a guiding pulse that I could follow. I then played the remaining three voices on guitar and finally replaced the original piano voice with guitar. Keith helped me with mixing the tracks and copying them to CD.

A year or so later, Keith wanted to create another CD-ROM on Greek architecture and again asked me to create some music. Somehow, the project never came to fruition, but I did record these three songs for Keith's consideration.

Unfortunately, for now, I can't find whatever printed scores I used for these recordings. Thus, I'm not able to include any details about these compositions.
